Gasparilla SUP Invasion 2016: Race Recap

This was my first race since November last year, well actually I did sign up for a race a few weeks back but that one was cancelled due to race conditions being too dangerous. Anyways, I was so excited for this race because it was in TAMPA, FL… All my family lives there so it was going to be a fun weekend with everyone!

I had my aunts and uncles come to the race to cheer me on, which was awesome but the event quickly turned for the worse…

Here’s what happened:

  1. First of all, parking was 15 dollars!
  2. You had to walk your board about a half mile to the dock
  3. The race was supposed to start at 10:20 am, we didn’t get started until 11 am.. Oh and it was 90 degrees outside!
  4. The dock was a single file line that took forever because it was super small with a long path to the actual dock
  5. There was no picture of the course for racers to look at, which made it difficult to picture in your head where to go exactly
  6. No one knew the buoys were little white crab trap buoys! Who does that??!!
  7. We all missed the first buoy! Going a half mile further, until the police came from behind us telling everyone to turn around. They should have told my friend, Brad, who was in the lead to turn around first so the order of the Elite class would not be messed up
  8. About 3-5 people turned around (those people ended up beating us all) and they were also in the back of the group to begin with…
  9. The rest of us, about 12 people sat in the water discussing what to do next since the race was now messed up
  10. We decided to start from there and create the race again, so we did
  11. Times were really messed up because we stopped for about 15 minutes and then stopped after the first lap because the race director didn’t know what was happening
  12. Then half the group went in due to frustration and the rest of us did the second half of the course to finish the race
  13. A 6 mile race turned into over 7 miles of confusion
  14. Plus, boat traffic was insane, so many boats!
  15. Also, the race finished around 1 pm but awards weren’t until 4!! Who wants to wait around for a piece of paper, I heard that’s what the trophies were because I left before the awards since times were so screwed up
  16. Overall, it was a mess

The good thing was I got a great workout in and meet some really cool paddlers out on the water!

Paddlefest: Sup Race Recap Nov. 14, 2015

I signed up just hours before this race, so happy I didn’t have to work that Saturday and got to compete instead. My last race didn’t go too well, which makes me super eager to get out there again. The race was about an hour from my house at Manasota Key, a place I’ve never paddled before.

First thoughts: it was cold (first cold front in Florida), windy, and an unfamiliar place so I wasn’t sure how it was going to go. The race director changed the course due to conditions, which actually shortened the course by over 1 mile. That’s okay with me!

For breakfast I had a lot of water and a Quest bar 2 hours before race time. I also tried OX Endurance formula for the first time before the race. And I really liked it! I think it gave me an extra boost! It did hydrate me as well! I felt good throughout the length of the course, which is awesome.

The start of the race was not too good. No one knew when to go, there was a warning horn that some thought was the starting horn and then with the confusion, the race started. It was a mess in the beginning but thankfully, I started in a good place. But others weren’t as lucky.

This race had some different rules then most. You could not draft any watercraft until after the first buoy turn, which was over 1 mile away. This rule definitely helped me, I’m not a huge fan of pulling people, so I tried to snag a lead early. And then, the race director said you could draft anyone of any board size or class. I ended up getting right behind a guy on a 14′ and then had a guy on a prone board behind me.

Overall, the race was well done. There was a decent BBQ afterwards and vendors. It was a lot of fun. The location was great and it was easy to unload your boards. The race had awards for Top Finishers and a raffle afterwards. Not too shabby.

I ended up placing 1st in the Women’s Elite 12’6″! Woohooo

Paddle at the Point: Race Recap 9/19/2015

It was a beautiful day after a week of rain and clouds. The sun was shining and it was bringing intense heat, especially since there was no wind. With temperatures around 90 degrees Fahrenheit, I knew it was going to be a brutal race.

The Start

This race beat me up bad. Never felt so unprepared for a race but learning to lose and figuring out what you need to work on is actually something I need. I need to play around with my diet and training. It’s tough training alone because I never push myself but I’m going to have to figure out a way to do that.

This week at work and moving into a new house has been so stressful. I knew I’ve been tired, I think it’s time for a mini vacation or even just a simple massage.

However, to talk about the race, I have a lot of suggestions for the race coordinator. It all started when I showed up. Registering online was easy.

Things the race did well:

  1. They had a lot of safety boats and police along the course.
  2. Gave out t-shirts
  3. Money prizes for some elite divisions
  4. Informative racers meeting
  5. Good live music afterwards

Things the race did poorly:

  1. The venue and place to put your boards in was not easy.
  2. The elite race had to wait 15/20 minutes in the sun before the start
  3. No photos were taken in the water, the Men’s 14 Elite had a photo finish so there was no proof as to who actually deserved first place
  4. No trophies were given, unless you count a bead necklace as a trophy
  5. Money is mailed to you (We will see if it comes)
  6. The race was expensive
  7. The food wasn’t great and water to drink was tough to find after the race
  8. Only three bathrooms
  9. No raffles
  10. Not a good race to watch if you are a spectator

Overall, I’m not too happy about the race itself. Most races are so fun after all the races are done but this one didn’t really have many vendors or places to socialize. Hopefully, the race director fixes some things up for the next one. We will see.

Paddle At The Porch: SUP Race Recap

After one of my longest weeks at work, I decided to travel 7 hours to Destin, FL. So right after I got off on Friday, I hit the road. I have never traveled that far to a paddle board race before but I thought why not! My uncle lives 20 minutes from the race venue so no hotel and my mom was willing to make the trip with me so I had company and good bonding time with her!

The race took place at a restaurant called “The Back Porch.” The race had plenty of parking and an easy drop off area for your boards. The beach had nice white sand and the water was so clean and clear. The weather was overcast so the temperature was not nearly as hot as usual, which was awesome! However, there was a lot of wind, waves and a very strong current. Oh, and jellyfish with super long tentacles everywhere!!!!

The race began at 9 am and consisted of 4 laps with a beach start and a running finish for a total of 6 miles. The start was pretty crazy with people falling left and right, I even fell at the beginning after getting hit by a wave. I ended up falling three more times due to exhaustion and my legs getting fatigued. You lose focus for a second and the next one, you are in the water.

This race had the roughest conditions I have ever dealt with. I even wore my leash, just incase! The most exhilarating part of the race for me, was riding a wave into the beach on the last lap. I do not surf, like at all… so to catch a wave and not fall was the greatest feeling! I didn’t even care if I placed or not, after that just happened.

I ended up getting 2nd, I had no idea! So that was great to hear! I never really knew how many women were in front of me the whole race. The great thing about making it to the podium was receiving a $1,000 check! CHA-CHINGGG! That’s the most money I’ve ever won in an event.

Overall, the race was organized very well! The one thing I didn’t really like was how the food was setup and what it was but other than that, I had no complaints!

CONGRATS to my HovieSUP teammate, Kieran Grant for getting first in the Men’s 14′ Elite and taking home $1500 and to my buddy, Connor Bonham for taking 2nd for the Mens 14′ Elite.

Sarasota SUP Championships at Siesta Key Beach: Race Recap

This is the third time I have competed in this race and the last two times were super wavy and windy! But not this time! It was calm with just a few little bumps. However, no wind during the Florida Summer time means super hot, so hot!

I was so happy to have my parents, my aunt and uncle and some of my best friends come out and support me! I couldn’t have done it without them. My dad helped me with my board every lap and my mom gave me water while I ran on the beach! My friends and family I could hear cheering, it was such a great atmosphere.

Also, my HovieSUP team was there! It’s always so much fun when we get together at these events. There was good food, live music, lots of vendors, and so many awesome paddle boarders and one was Danny Ching!

I ended up getting first in the 10K Women’s 12″6′ Elite Race and first overall. The course is a tough one so I was so nervous at the start! 7 buoy turns each lap, and there were 4 laps. After each lap, you had to run in and jump off your board then run on the beach, then jump back on your board AND do it again and again and again!!

Battle on the Blueway: SUP Race Recap

On May 30th in Fort Myers Beach, FL I decided to finally participate in a paddleboard race after 7 months of not racing. The race was called the Battle on the Blueway and attracted over 100 paddlers.

I raced in the 7 mile course on my HovieSUP comet and let me tell you… I did not feel ready to take on such a long race just yet but I somehow managed to find some energy from somewhere!

The conditions were pretty flat with some occasional bumps from boats and some wind. It was hot but a beautiful day to be on the water. Overall, a great day for racing.

Women's 12'6" EliteIt was fun getting to travel with my race team and hangout with everyone again. It’s been so long! I managed to get 4th place in the Women’s 12’6″ Elite. Team HovieSUP did awesome too and brought home some hardware and paper$$$!

Another Cold Day, Another Treadmill Workout

So I thought it was going to be warm where I live from here on out but this morning was brutal, low 40’s and a 20 mph wind from the North. These conditions made me decide to go to the gym. I wanted to get a good cardio workout in and add in some bodyweight exercises as well so here is what I did.

I picked a good distance pace because I decided I wanted to run for about an hour but not all at once.

I got on the treadmill and ran at an 8:13 pace for 10 minutes, then stopped the machine and quickly moved to the floor. I did 20 push-ups, then 100 russian twists and then another ab exercise that I changed up every round.

After I finished that, I got back on the treadmill and ran for another 10 minutes at an 8:13 pace and did the same workouts after. I did this for 6 rounds.

So here it is at a quick glance:

  • 10 minutes running/jogging at a pace good for you
  • Push-ups (pick a number that will push you)
  • Russian twists: try and do 50-100, we want a lot of reps (no weight or weight)
  • Leg raises: 30 or pick a number that makes you feel it in your abs!
  • Then repeat this as many times as you want!

It went by so much faster than just running straight through. And I got an arm and ab workout at the same time. You can adjust the workout to fit your needs and your level. The first round seems easy but remember you have 5 more after that.

Towel break!

It is tough but so rewarding once you are done. Remember to drink water and have a towel with you. Try not to take long breaks and keep your body moving!

20 Minute Leg Workout

A short workout is better than no workout at all. Here is a quick leg workout for when you don’t have a ton of time. I used weight but all of these moves can be done with no weights.

Keep a timer going. When you finish one move, look at the time and only give yourself no more than 30 seconds of recovery time***. Then, start on the next move.

1. Walking Lunges:

15 lunges on each leg/30 total

Try not to stop during this workout. Remember you are trying to get this done in 20 minutes. Stay balanced and make sure your front knee doesn’t go past your toes. Get your back knee to barely touch the floor or almost touch it.

I used 25 pound plates but you can choose to use no weight or any amount of weight that challenges you.

2. Alternating Lateral Lunges:

10 each leg/20 total

First, lunge to the right

First, lunge to the right.

Lunge to the side and get low. Keep your posture upright and don’t let your knee go over your toes. Try and sit your butt back to get the most out of this workout.

Then, go to the left.

Then, go to the left.

Keep alternating from right to left until you get to 20 total. I used a 25 pound weight during this workout but once again, you decide what is best for you. Remember everyone is different.

3. Wall Sits:

This is tough. My legs were shaking after about 30 seconds. But keep pushing until the minute is over. I kept a 25 pound plate on my legs for extra.

Find a good wall for this and try not to rest your hands on your knees. Keep your legs bent at a 90 degree angle.

Repeat 4 times.

Remember to bring a towel and drink lots of water. Warm-up prior to this workout to get the blood flowing and your heart rate up. Hopefully, you find this workout as challenging as I did!

***Also, if you feel like you need longer than 30 seconds for rest, give yourself more time and try to eventually work up to repeating each exercise 4 times in 20 minutes.

 

Treadmill Incline Workout

Another cold morning, means another treadmill workout. I tested out some incline today and it wasn’t easy. But that’s the point! Also, prior to this, I did a 2 mile jogging warm-up, followed by dynamic stretching and I was also mentally preparing myself for what was to follow:

WorkoutI like to give myself enough time when I am walking at a 4.0 so I can recover, towel off, and drink some water. Also, catch your breath because as the workout continues, it gets tougher.

If you follow this you should end with approx. 3.75 miles and if you do a 2 mile warm-up than it is about 5.75 miles!

Treadmill Incline

The first 6 minutes in each set are challenging, but once you push through the second half is not too bad.

Change the speed first.

Then change the incline.

Only hold onto the treadmill while you are changing settings.

Remember you can adjust this workout to your fitness level. Also, you don’t have to repeat it 3 times, even once is good! That’s why I always do a 2 mile warm-up because I feel accomplished before the workout even starts, just incase I have to cut it short.

Treadmill Interval Workout #1

I have been totally spoiled living in Florida. I am a complete baby when it comes to running outside in the cold. After moving to northern Texas, I discovered that I am not a fan of running in blistery weather. It’s cold and always windy here, at least to me it is.

Therefore, I have been running on the treadmill more. Up until today, I would normally just run at a constant speed for 3-8 miles depending on the day. But that is just so boring!! I was finding it difficult to keep this up.

So today I tried an interval workout. I created this workout in my head as I ran for my warm-up and it actually turned out to be challenging.

It was an awesome workout. Also, I did it all at a 1.5 incline. I thought it was a great first attempt for an interval workout. It was tough but not too tough.

I made sure to get a dynamic warm-up in before that included high knees, butt kicks, knee hugs, walking lunges with a twist, and some other moves that I’m not too sure of the names. Warming up helps tremendously.

Adjust this workout for you!

If you want it to be more of a challenge, then increase the speed of each and vice versa if you would like to make it a little slower.

Also, you don’t have to run as many miles. Make the workout good for you, I want you to push yourself but not to the point of passing out.
